The best person to decide what research shall be done is the one doing the research. The next best is the head of the department. After that you leave the field of best persons and meet increasingly worse groups. The first of these is the research director, who is probably wrong more than half the time. Then comes a committee which is wrong most of the time. Finally there is a committee of company vice-presidents, which is wrong all the time.

Dr. Grégoire Casalis is Professor and Director of the Doctoral School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, SUPAERO, and Research Director, Department of Aerodynamics and Energetics, ONERA, Toulouse, France.

His main research focuses on the instability of boundary layers, shocked flow, jet noise, and rockets. He has published more than 30 papers in international and national journals. Most of his publications are about new formulations and models that provide meaningful insight into stability sources and the means to suppress them in the design of rockets. In recent years, Dr. Casalis has been working with hydrodynamic instability and the formulation of a code to predict rocket stability.

Dr. Casalis received his engineering and mathematical (Agrégation de mathématique) degrees in 1985 from the Ecole Normale Supérieure Saint-Cloud Fontenay and his doctorate in 1990 from Paris VI, ONERA, Toulouse.
